Unisex, gender neutral, genderless – however you want to label them, fragrances are becoming less restricted and more dynamic. These are some of the best gender neutral fragrances we simply adore.
When fragrance – like most things – is so gendered, the search for the best gender neutral fragrances can seem tricky. Why do we need gender neutral fragrances? Well, fragrance wasn’t always so gendered. Before the boom of mass advertising and the television (how old do we sound right now?), fragrances were created in line with fragrance families as opposed to what men and women were supposed to smell like.
Of course, sweeter florals have long been associated with femininity and smoky woods seen as one with the macho men cutting trees down in the movies but fragrances weren’t specifically made to fit stereotypes like they became. Then came CK One.
Calvin Klein broke the mould in 1994 by releasing CK One, the first fragrance to be marketed as gender neutral. The revolutionary release cut through the men’s and women’s divide and proved how popular and timeless genderless fragrances could be; forgoing the limitations of so-called masculine or feminine notes to create a unique combination to empower all genders.
Nearly 30 years later, CK One still smells fresh. Its most recent sequel CK Everyone has also built on its legacy by pushing the boundaries of genderless fragrances, acknowledging fragrance has already moved on from unisex to all. CK lead the way but which other brands are freeing themselves from old-fashioned ideals? Here are the best gender neutral fragrances…

Tom Ford makes some of the very best gender neutral fragrances around and Oud Minérale is one of its finest. The woody aquatic fragrance has a defining marine accord and unique salty accord, which make it a truly individual scent for all, whether you are actually at one with nature or not. Add some mystery and fake it ’til you make it!
Gucci first went gender neutral with Gucci Oud in 2014 but the designer amped things up with Mémoire d’une Odeur in 2019. The warm and enticing Eau De Parfum combines airy and musky accords to create a fresh and enticing fragrance with depth, with a rich base of Sandalwood, Cedar and Vanilla to complement whoever wears it.
Allsaints has one mission with its fragrance collection: to ‘open the boundless doors of self-expression.’ Each scent brings something different to the table, with Incense City being the oriental woody fragrance combining Incense with notes of Cedar, Cypress and Musk. Treat yourself to a gift set – now on offer at £20.00 – to get a 15ml Spray so you don’t need to carry the 100ml wherever you go.
The gender neutral God of fragrance, Calvin Klein first launched the limited summer edition of the original CK One in 2004. CK One Summer 2021 is yet another delicious iteration of the iconic release; an aquatic-citrus scent with an effervescent mix of fruity notes drying down to a woody base, sweetened by Peach Skin, Watermelon and Rhubarb, ensuring its burst of freshness lingers long enough ’til sunset.
Mandorlo Di Sicilia Eau De Toilette by Acqua di Parma joined the legendary Blu Mediterraneo family in 1999. The classic Amber-Floral gender neutral fragrance brings touches of Sicily with the sweet freshness of Bergamot, which opens into a blend of White Peach, Ylang-Ylang and Jasmine. Its velvety, woody base is made up of powdery Bourbon Vanilla, White Musk, and Tolu Balsam, making for a fresh and airy scent just perfect for the summer.
Costa Azzurra is as fresh a fragrance as they come. A new edition of Tom Ford’s Signature Collection scent, the new Costa Azzurra is crafted with complementary accords suited to everyone. The original’s aromatic Mediterranean essence is given a new crisp freshness with the addition of citrus notes, but its long-lasting base medley of oaks and aromatics stays true to form to capture the easy sensuality of sunkissed escapism.
Rouge is the deliciously decadent fresh and woody fragrance by 1667, released with the entirely gender neutral La Collection Royale collection. With enticing top notes of Bergamot, Lime and Tagete, its woody base is given a floral twist from heart notes of Jasmine, Fir Balsam, Saffron and the luxurious Oud. This one has a higher price point but it’s worth every single penny.
Britney Spears fragrances are as legendary as her music. Her first, Curious, sold more than 500 million bottles in 10 years, so it’s understandable why she’s now on her 31st. In 2018 she released her first gender neutral fragrance, Prerogative, to expand her collection, and it’s easily one of our favourites. The Amber Vanilla fragrance mixes soft petals with espresso foam with spices above a warm and woody base of Sandalwood and Amberwood. It’s truly irresistible.
Missguided stepped into the gender neutral fragrance sphere with Real Babe, the latest addition to the brand’s ever-growing scent collection released in 2021. The bold Almond-Floral fragrance is unexpected and empowering, with Pink Peppercorn invigorating its citrus opening that mingles with a Frosted Pineapple accord (yum!) before making way for a dry Amber, Musk and Tonka base.
Yú Parfums is the niche fragrance house delivering one-of-a-kind experiences fit for everyone. With themed editions every few months, Yú collates three original unique fragrances inspired by the world around us – whether it be pushing the limits of the woody fragrance family or creating aromatic olfactive experiences inspired by the natural scents of fabrics or skin.
