Your Sunday evening round up of the biggest events this week.

We’re excited to announce that this week, there has been a lot of good news, and if not ‘good’, it’s not been as heartbreaking or serious as what we’ve encountered recently. To summarise, we’ve put together five bullet points of information to keep you up to date on what is happening in the world.

  • Sandi Toksvig has announced that she will be leaving The Great British Bake Off after three years on the show. When the nationally adored BBC show moved to Channel 4 in 2017, Sandi took over as presenter with co-host, Noel Fielding. Her reasons for leaving involve wanting to spend more time on other work. Speculation over who will take over has gone wild, from Jonathan Van Ness teasing us on Twitter to rumours about Rylan Clarke-Neal and previous GBBO Winner, Nadiya Hussain.
  • After fears that airline, Flybe could follow in the foot steps of recently folded Thomas Cook, ministers and investors revealed a rescue deal to save it. The agreement includes a potential loan of approximately £100m and/or a possible short-term deferral of a £106m air passenger duty bill, plus a pledge to review taxes on domestic flights before the March budget. The saving deal has sparked complaints from both RyanAir and British Airways, where they have demanded access to the same tax treatment.
  • Christopher Tolkien, son of Lord of the Rings writer JRR Tolkien, has died aged 95, the Tolkien Society announced on Thursday. Christopher was born in Leeds in 1924, and was the youngest son of the much loved and admired fantasy author and his wife Edith. He grew up listening to his father’s tales of Bilbo Baggins, which later became the children’s fantasy novel, The Hobbit.
  • There are worldwide celebrations as rain falls on Australia, helping to put out some of the month-long bush fires that have devastated parts of the country. It is thought that at least 36 wildfires have been extinguished due to the rain this week so far, and with more forecast rain for the weekend it is hoped that more will be helped.
  • Love Island contestant, Ollie Williams walked out of the new winter villa in Cape Town after just three days of the show airing. Prior to the first winter series starting, news articles were published in papers like The Sun and The Daily Mail exposing photos of the soon-to-be star posing with dead animals. His reasons for leaving were that he allegedly ‘still loved someone’ else and that it wouldn’t have been fair on any of the girls in the villa if he stayed. Since leaving, Ollie has stated that he “did not shoot any of the animals shown in the photographs nor has [he] ever shot as a trophy hunter.”
